Major illness-related counselling

The counsellors at The Gawler Foundation are trained and experienced in counselling people who are living with the challenges associated with a life-threatening illness, especially cancer. These counselling sessions can be beneficial for the person with the diagnosis, their partners and family members.

A life-threatening illness such as cancer or Multiple Sclerosis can motivate many people to explore and heal unresolved issues from the past and move on to deal effectively with challenges in their present lifestyle.
This type of counselling is aimed at helping people to take more control of the healing journey and to help restore hope when it falters.
A counselling session related to major illness may explore such issues as:

  • finding meaning in life and illness
  • maintaining a positive mental attitude
  • dealing with self-doubt, self-criticism and guilt
  • communication issues between family members
  • self-esteem, personal and spiritual growth
  • dealing with anxiety and depression
  • forgiveness of self and others
  • relationship problems
  • facing fears of death and dying

Home and hospital based counselling

A counselling service for people experiencing cancer (and their families) is available for people who are not well enough to travel to our venues at Yarra Junction or Hawthorn. Arrangements can be made for one of our counsellors to visit clients at their home or in hospital. This service is available within the Melbourne metropolitan area and the Yarra Ranges district.
